For years my husband has said to me, “Honey, you work too much! You need a hobby”. So guess what I got myself a hobby. I’m gonna learn how to sew!!!!!
It all started when I was planning my outfits for our upcoming trip to Walt Disney World (granted it’s still 3 months away). I’m creating themed outfits and I’ve already put together a Snow White inspired outfit, I’m working on an Evil Queen inspired outfit and so forth. I really wanted to find a Tiki dress when I happened to come across this AMAZING fabric on Etsy (I found more on Ebay) and thought I could have a dress made just for me with this magical fabric. However the more I thought about it I decided that I wanted to make that dress for myself.
So I headed on down to Hancock Fabrics and low and behold they are starting a new session of classes next week! So I signed up, bought myself a sewing machine and a fancy new table and gosh darn it I’m going to learn how to sew!
I’ve been checking out some great blogs about sewing. Tilly and the Buttons and Gertie’s New Blog for Better Sewing. Both have been immensely helpful and inspiring. I even bought Gertie’s book. My mother was an amazing seamstress and I’m really sad that I never got to learn from her. She made the majority of my clothes until I was about 10 years old. And then when I got older she would make costumes and even made a few swing dance dresses for me. I’m not sure why she never taught me, or why I never asked, but now I am going to learn and I hope to do her proud.

6th Sep 2013 - 3:16 amThis is something I also long to do. It seems our mothers were both quite the seamstresses. Mine also made clothes for my sister & me. And she sewed a lot for the dance studios too when we were very little. I learned to sew in middle school. But never really took to it. I tried later in life to make doll clothes. That was fun!
