We now live about 45 minutes from the French border, so for The Gentleman’s birthday yesterday we decided to drive to Metz, France and spend the afternoon. It’s been really hot again here, so I figured what better time to wear my seersucker dress.

Metz was a wonderful surprise. I immediately felt like we were in France, with the beautiful architecture, stunning gardens and the little bistros, it’s almost like a little Paris so close to me. We walked around the Place St. Louis where there was a small carousel with some creative seats.

We went to the indoor market and then had a simple lunch and walked around a bit more before we headed home. I can’t wait to go back and spend more time here, it really is a beautiful city and just made me so happy to be in France once again.

Medieval Festival in a real Medieval Village

As a frequent attendee of Renaissance Faires, Celtic Flings and Scottish Highland Games in the States, I was elated to find that a variation of these events occur in Germany. Of course they typically happen in actual Castles or Medieval Villages, which ups the ante quite a bit in my book.

The Richard the Lionhearted Festival in Annweiler am Trifels commemorates the English king, Richard the Lionheart, being taken prisoner at Trifels Castle in Annweiler from 1193 to 1194. German Emperor Heinrich VI captured him on his way back from the Holy Land. Richard was obliged to stay in prison until the English paid an incredibly high ransom.

There was a medieval marketplace, sword fighting, falconry, fantastic food all with this beautiful medieval village as the backdrop.
