My Love Affair with eShakti

*This is an unpaid review*

If you have followed my blog or my Instagram account for any amount of time, you’ll know that I hold a deep love and appreciation of eShakti garments. I’ve been buying from them and wearing their garments for many years now. I’ve watched the company change and grow and have very much enjoyed seeing the different concepts they have come up with.

Although they aren’t a traditional vintage reproduction clothing company, they do offer many vintage-inspired items with beautiful details and fabrics that are very reminisent of styles from the 1930s, 40s, and 50s.

In a moment I will run down the list of why I love eShakti so much, but first I want to talk about a feature that I’ve recently tried and want to tell you all about it. It’s called Fabric Customization. They’ve had this option for a while now, but I’ve just come around to using it. You can choose a style of garment and change the fabric of that garment to something that suits you best.

Here’s an example. I love the style of the dress on the left, but I’m not keen on the cotton poplin fabric. So I had it made with the crepe fabric on the right.

And here’s the result.

And the second dress I customized.

When I first decided to buy a dress from eShakti, I have to admit that pockets were my main objective. I am a staunch proponent of proper pockets in dresses and skirts. For far too long clothing companies have reduced the size of pockets in women’s clothing or have eliminated them all together. So when I heard that a clothing company made dresses and skirts with pockets STANDARD, I was ecstatic! And the pocket sizes are deep, you can hold just about everything you need in there. And most of the pockets are placed so well, that you don’t even know that they are there, so what you carry in your pockets are safe and secure.

So let’s run down some other of the reasons I love eShakti.

It’s all in the details

Sometimes you don’t realize how important certain garment details are until they are presented to you. eShakti is always adding new details that come standard that I never knew I was missing. Such as bra loops (or bra keeps). I hate it when you have a lovely boat neck or sleeveless dress and your bra keeps showing! That’s where a bra loop comes in handy. This little detail can really make you so much more comfortable in your outfit. It’s just a few snaps and a bit of fabric sewn into the shoulder seam, but it really makes a difference.

Another detail that seems to be a fairly recent (in the last few years or so) addition to button-down shirts and shirtdresses are extra hidden buttons that help keep gapping from happening. As a curvy gal with a larger bust, button-down shirts have always been an issue for me and I typically sew up the front to stop gapping from happening. But eShakti has added these small clear hidden buttons on the inside to help with this modesty issue.

Of course eShakti is known for its customization options. You can change the neckline, hem length and sleeve length on every garment. You can even put in your measurements and have the garment customized to your size if you don’t fall into their standard sizing. I highly recomed you use this option. You really get to “create” your very own custom garment. Their standard sizing fits me well for almost all items. I use the custom measurements for items like trousers, sheath dresses or anything that might be a bit more form-fitting. But I always customize my garment by changing either the neckline, sleeves or hem to suit my preferences.

Review of Voodoo Vixen’s “Faith” dress

A few months ago I was contacted by a representative of Voodoo Vixen and was asked if I’d be interested in reviewing a dress from their retro inspired line. Of course I quickly jumped over to the website to view what fantastic items they had to offer and at first I was disappointed to see that they did not have a plus size selection. I was then directed to the correct section (I think the website was still a bit under construction) that had the plus size offerings. Although I did find a very cute dress, I was very disheartened to see that it is was a very small selection. Since then, I’ve noticed that they have added a few new items to their plus size section, but as they have 110+ different dresses in traditional sizes, they only have 7 dresses in Plus Size and 6 cardigans. However, that shouldn’t deter you from checking them out. I only wish that the plus size selection was larger as there are several really cute dresses that would be wonderful in larger sizes.

I chose the Faith dress to review as it was the only one that seemed to suit my style. I did have a little difficulty in figuring out what size to choose. I typically wear a US 18 or 20 or 1X or 2X depending on the brand. As any plus size gal knows, sizing can range drastically from brand to brand – don’t get me started on the ridiculous sizing from Bettie Page (or Tatyana now, I believe) Clothing!!!!!

After getting the exact measurements of the dress I chose the size 3X, thinking if it was a little large I could take it in. Well it arrived promptly, and it fit great, if not a tiny bit snug. I was pleasently surprised to see that it was a knit dress and the length was perfect. I decided to style it with a tan cinch belt just to break up the pattern a bit. I also added a vintage hat and purse and tan maryjane heels.

What I love about this dress are the shoulders. They poof up a bit and really create a nice silhouette and give a little umph to the décolleté as the scoop neck is a bit unremarkable. I love dresses and tops that have a bit of detail at the shoulders, I adore shoulder pads, but don’t see them much in today’s styling. So this detail was an added surprise. Although this is a knit dress, it’s still lightweight, so I can see myself wearing this more in the Spring or Fall.
