Embracing Frizz: A Natural Element in Creating an Authentic Vintage Hairstyle

Embracing Frizz: A Natural Element in Creating an Authentic Vintage Hairstyle

In the realm of hairstyling, there’s a prevailing notion that sleek, smooth locks epitomize beauty, while frizz is often viewed as a flaw to be corrected. But this mindset overlooks the natural charm and authenticity that frizz can bring to one’s hair, especially in the context of vintage hairstyling.

The truth is, having frizzy hair doesn’t always indicate negligence or a lack of proper care. In fact, for many individuals with wavy or curly hair, frizz is simply a natural aspect of their hair texture. Contrary to societal standards that prioritize sleekness, embracing frizz can be a celebration of individuality and authenticity.

It’s disheartening to witness the portrayal of frizz as a moral failing in some social media posts and comments. The idea that smooth, frizz-free hair equates to success while embracing frizz is seen as a failure is a shallow perspective. In reality, healthy and well-maintained hair can exhibit frizz without any compromise on its beauty or vitality.

While there are countless products available to combat frizz, it’s important to recognize that many of these solutions often come at a cost. They may strip the hair of its natural body and softness, leading to a loss of its inherent character and causing limp-lifeless curls. Instead of viewing frizz as something to be tamed into submission, we should appreciate it as a unique aspect of our hair’s natural state.

When delving into the realm of vintage hairstyling, it becomes evident that frizz has its place and purpose. If we take a closer look at historical photographs of everyday women from the past, we’ll notice that many of them sported hairstyles with a bit of fluff and frizz. This is particularly evident in candid shots where women captured everyday moments, showcasing hairstyles that were practical yet stylish. Their hair has life and movement to it.

It’s essential to differentiate between these authentic representations of everyday women and the meticulously curated images of Hollywood actresses or models. The latter often feature perfectly smooth hairstyles, meticulously styled by professional hairdressers on hand to adhere to specific beauty standards and create a style that was only meant to be photographed, not actually lived in. These representations are not reflective of the realities faced by most individuals when it comes to hairstyling.

In authentic vintage hairstyling, imperfections such as frizz add character and depth to the overall look. They evoke a sense of nostalgia and authenticity that is often absent in modern hairstyling trends. Embracing frizz in vintage hairstyling is not about compromising on style or elegance; rather, it’s about celebrating the natural beauty of one’s hair and embracing it in its truest form.

In short, frizz in vintage hairstyling is not something to be remedied or corrected unless it’s a result of damage or neglect. Instead, it should be embraced as a natural and authentic aspect of one’s hair texture. By challenging societal norms and embracing frizz, we can redefine beauty standards and celebrate the diversity and uniqueness of all hair types.

In the world of vintage hairstyling, embracing frizz as a natural element can add an authentic touch to the overall look. However, while frizz can be celebrated as a charming aspect of vintage hairstyles, it’s also important to prioritize maintaining healthy hair and scalp to minimize excessive frizz that could cause damage to your hair. By incorporating simple yet effective tips such as using sulfate-free shampoos, conditioning regularly, and avoiding excessive heat styling, we can nurture the hair’s natural texture while reducing excessive frizz.

Embracing some frizz in vintage hairstyling doesn’t mean neglecting hair care; rather, it’s about striking a balance between celebrating natural beauty and ensuring the health and vitality of one’s hair.

Tips for managing frizz when doing a vintage wet set

Use Filtered Water: If you live in an area with hard water, consider investing in a showerhead filter or a water filter for your sink. Hard water can strip the hair of its natural oils, leading to increased frizz and dullness. Using filtered water can help maintain the hair’s moisture balance and reduce frizz.

Choose the Right Styling Products for your Hair Type: Opt for lightweight styling products such as a water-based pomade or a hair serum/oil specifically designed to combat frizz. These products will help smooth the hair without weighing it down or leaving it greasy. And remember a little bit of product goes a long way, start small and add more if needed.

Recommendations: Bumble & Bumble Hairdresser’s Invisible Oil

Proper Roller Removal: When removing rollers from your wet set, be gentle and avoid pulling on the hair. Start by unwinding the roller in the opposite direction of the curl, then gently slide it out to avoid disrupting the curl pattern and causing frizz.

Set Hair on Wet Hair: Ensure that your hair is thoroughly wet when setting it in rollers. Hair that is too dry may result in frizz, as the cuticle will be more prone to roughness and flyaways. Apply your setting lotion to each section as you roll, saturating the hair to ensure adequate moisture is retained.

Choose Setting Lotions without Alcohol: Alcohol based products can dry out the hair and contribute to frizz. To minimize damaging the hair when styling vintage hairstyles, opt for setting lotions that are alcohol-free. Alcohol-free setting lotions help to maintain moisture in the hair, reducing the likelihood of frizz while providing hold for your desired vintage look.

Recommendation: Homemade Flax Seed Setting Lotion

Maintain Consistent Tension: When rolling your hair, maintain consistent tension to create smooth, uniform curls. Avoid pulling too tightly, as this can cause unnecessary stress on the hair and contribute to frizz.

Protective Styling at Night: To preserve your vintage wet set and minimize frizz overnight, consider wrapping your hair in a silk scarf, bonnet or sleeping on a silk pillowcase. This will help prevent friction and static, which can lead to frizz and flyaways.

Recommendation: Silk Sleeping Bonnet

Regular Maintenance: Lastly, you can maintain your vintage wet set by re-rolling your hair at night using pin curls. There is no need to use additional setting lotion, simply curling the hair dry will help redefine curls and smooth out any frizz that may have occurred throughout the day.

By incorporating these tips into your vintage wet set routine, you can effectively manage frizz and achieve beautifully defined curls reminiscent of classic Hollywood glamour.

The old Hollywood pictures were also under tightly monitored temperature and humidity control. Something we Southern US ladies have no hope of controlling 😁. I’ve stopped seeing my frizzy hair as, as you said, a moral failing and now I see it as adding a softness to my hairstyle. I contain it as much as reasonably possible and just get on with the business of living! Great article Christine!

I am so envious of anyone who has a bit of a wave in their hair. I’d gladly embrace the frizz! I have dead straight silk for hair. I have trouble holding styles because of its natural tendency to drop. It takes some pretty industrial products to maintain a wavy style. It’s so fine, I can even comb it through with a louse comb. Both my parents are children of people with decent waves and body in their hair. I have the hair of my great grandmother, who was able to grow hers to floor length, no waves or frizz in sight.
When I was about four, my mum decided to rag roll my collar length bob as a treat for the Sunday School picnic we were going on. Instead of Shirley Temple’s ringlets, I had a very tight fluffy afro, which was back to normal on Monday morning.
Embrace that frizz, you lucky girls who have hair that naturally waves and curls. I know for me, a curly style is only as good as the lacquer holding it together and that it’s a nothing more than a sweet, gentle breeze outside the salon.

    Hi there!
I love your content and your look is glamorous in the ways I hope to look myself someday. Your hair tutorials, especially the one about the science of the wet set, was eye-opening and took a lot of the mystery away. And you are the first one I’ve found that has curly hair like myself which has me super excited to use the products you recommend to see if they work as well for me. I would dearly love to attend one of your classes, but at the moment you’re too far away…hello from Texas! Maybe in the future you might consider a zoom option? If that’s not something you’re interested in trying, that’s ok…just wanted to ask. I’ll still be keeping my eyes peeled for any and all content you share. I hope this message finds you in good spirits and wish you much success with your upcoming workshop! ❤️
