My Skincare Ritual

As an holistic esthetician I take the care of my skin very seriously and try my best to make healthy choices for myself and my body. But I wasn’t always an esthetician. I was however lucky enough to have a mother who taught me at an early age how to take care of my skin, my hair and my body. I truly enjoy my twice daily skincare rituals ~ and yes I do view them as rituals. It is my time to myself to honor me and care for myself and my skin. I advise all of my clients to view their skincare in this way. It really doesn’t take too much extra time, but it can really make a difference in how you view yourself and how well your skin responds to your products. And as they say…your’re worth it!
I’ll get more into the actual ritual a little later, but let’s talk a bit about the products I use. With full disclosure, I am a Certified Dr. Hauschka Esthetician and 99% of my skincare products are from Dr. Hauschka. However, I only became a Dr. Hauschka esthetician AFTER I had already been using the products for more than 10 years. I was introduced to the line in my early 20’s and completely fell in love with the products and their philosophy on holistic skincare.
I have fairly oily skin and have had issues with cystic acne in the past. I also have very fair skin and it tends to be reactive to heat and harsh ingredients. Dr. Hauschka’s skincare has improved my skin and kept it healthy and happy for many years. But it’s not all about the products. Good skin starts from within. Whenever I start to eat poorly, don’t drink enough water, don’t get enough rest or get too stressed out, my skin lets me know. This is where having a ritual to care for your skin is so vital, it gives you a chance to really look at your skin and see what it’s telling you. It is so important to take care of yourself from the inside so your skin can continue to glow and protect you against the elements.
My Morning Skincare Ritual
Cleanser ~ Dr. Hauschka Cleansing Cream
Toner ~ Dr. Hauschka Clarifying Toner
Moisturizer ~ Dr. Hauschka Melissa Day Cream or Normalizing Day Oil (if I’m supper oily)
Eye Cream ~ Dr. Hauschka Regenerating Eye Cream
Sunscreen ~ Naturopathica Lavender SPF 17
Since my skin is clean from the night before – you always remove your makeup and cleanse your skin before bed…right???? – I just use the Dr. Hauschka Cleansing Cream in the shower. Then I spray on my toner, put on my moisturizer, eye cream and then my sunscreen. It’s that simple, now my skin is ready for make-up.
My Evening Skincare Ritual
Eye-makeup Remover ~ Farmesthetics Eyebright Eyemakeup Remover & Treatment Oil
Cleanser ~ Dr. Hauschka Soothing Cleansing Milk
Toner ~ Dr. Hauschka Clarifying Toner
Bath Essence ~ Dr. Hauschka Moor Lavender or Almond (I love both and switch between the two often)
Facial Compress ~ 100% cotton facial compress. My spa sells them in packs of 8 so I use a new, clean one every night
For my evening skincare ritual, I fill the sink with warm water and add a few pumps of either the Moor Lavender Calming or Almond Soothing Bath Essence. I use that to soak my cotton rounds to remove my eye makeup and for my facial compress to cleanse my face. The Eyebright Eye-makeup Remover is fantastic for removing waterproof mascara. Because it’s an oil, it breaks down the mascara quickly and you are able to wipe it away with one or two swipes. This is important as the skin around your eyes is very thin and delicate.
I use the facial compress (soaked in a Bath Essence) to moisten and warm my face. I take a few deep breaths in of the Bath Essence and I’m instantly calmed. I then cleanse my face TWICE. Once to remove my makeup, and the second time to actually cleanse my skin. Then I spray on my toner and that’s it! Dr. Hauschka recommends not using a moisturizer at night as to let the skin breathe and perform its important functions throughout the night. This concept is for all skin types, even dry skin as using moisturizer (especially heavier ones) can actually make the skin reliant on that product and not produce it’s own moisture.
Additional Skincare
I wash and set my hair once a week, so this is the night that I also use a mask. I alternate between the Revitalizing and Firming Masks each week. The Revitalizing Mask is a life saver! If my skin in freaking out due to travel or it’s just not looking it’s best, this mask will make my skin glow. I’ve recently started using the Firming Mask. As I’m getting closer to 40 I want to help my skin look it’s best for as long as possible.
At the start of each season I use the Renewing Night Conditioner. It’s a 30 day treatment ~ it comes in individual ampules ~ that replaces your evening toner. This treatment helps ease your skin into a new season. Living on the East Coast, we actually have seasons (I’m originally from San Diego), so this treatment is essential to my skincare ritual. It’s also good to have on hand if you travel a lot or in times of extreme stress. It calms, revives and balances your skin.
I of course am biased when it comes to using Dr. Hauschka products, but they have worked wonders for me for the past 15 years, so if it’s not broke….I’m happy to answer any questions you may have about skincare or the products that I use. I encourage you to leave comments or contact me on Facebook.
I came across this fantastic video from the 1940s on how to care for your skin. I think it sums it up quite nicely!

26th Apr 2014 - 10:41 pmI was really interested in the comment about not using a face cream at night. Makes sense, but because I’m 77 and have mature, dry skin I am wondering if the Bio-Oil I use nightly is okay in your estimation. Elena

27th Apr 2014 - 2:50 amThat video was fantastic, – guess things haven’t changed as much as I imagined. i am crazy pale and other then a daily moisturizer and sunscreen (I travel a lot in the Caribbean for work) I don’t pay much attention to my skin as I should. At least, I didn’t..maybe now I’ll start..the closer 50 gets..the more concerned I am.

It’s never too late to start taking care of your skin. I’m happy to hear that you use sunscreen. That is the first step to keeping your skin looking young.

25th Sep 2014 - 8:42 amHow good is clarifying toner? Does it do somehting specific for the skin? Or it’s more like just a step in routine?

3rd Oct 2014 - 1:06 pmToner is a very important step in any skin care routine. It completes the cleansing process, balances the pH of the skin and helps your moisturizer hydrate better. The Clarifying toner contains special ingredients like Anthyllis to calm the skin and Daisy and Nasturtium help to minimize the appearance of blackheads and blemishes. It balances the production of oil to help keep the skin clear.
I think toners are one of the most under utilized and misunderstood of the skin care products. I could not live without my toner. I hope this helps.

7th Dec 2017 - 1:46 amHi! Great post! How do you actually clean your face at night? Could you please go into detail about that? Thank you so much!

10th Dec 2017 - 6:17 amI go into some detail in the post, so I’m not exactly sure how to answer your question. I use the Cleansing milk to remove my makeup and cleanse my skin. I use the cotton cloths to wipe off the product.

18th May 2021 - 10:05 amVery informative 🙂 Do you have any links to the facial compresses you use? Are they just regular washcloths/hand towels?

18th May 2021 - 11:44 amThese particular compresses were from my spa, so they came from a spa professional catalog. However, I’ve found that cotton diaper cloths are essentially the same thing. I’ve bought a few of these and I really like them. https://amzn.to/3u3z3xf
